MOVIE: About a Boy

NUTSHELL: A swinging London bachelor lies about having a kid to crash a single parents group in order to pick up women and encounters a spacy latchkey kid with a suicidal mom. Complications and personal growth ensue.

GOOD THINGS: Hugh Grant, shiny, happy London, the kitchen of tomorrow, the units concept of time

BAD THINGS: Hippies and more narration than a Ken Burns program. I know everyone’s in love with the book but can we get a little restraint?

FEATURES: Toni Collette as another tortured mom, Rachel Weisz, angst-causing Christmas muzak, Nicholas Hoult, a Roberta Flack set piece

UNCOMFORTABLE MOMENTS: Kid was annoying. I really wished he would just leave poor Hugh Grant alone after a while and that is so not the point of the movie.

NOTABLE: I know Hugh Grant is supposed to seem pathetic, empty and alone in this movie but his lifestyle looked good to me.

BEST PART: Oddly, the Roberta Flack set piece

BEST LINE: I am an island. I am bloody Ibiza!

CROWNS: 2 out of 5
