Kate and Leopold

MOVIE:  Kate and Leopold

NUTSHELL:  Crazy inventor guy Stuart Besser discovers a portal to olden tymes and is chased back to Manhattan by fancy lad Leopold Alexis Elijah Walker Gareth Thomas Mountbatten who falls for crazy inventor guy’s ex girlfriend Kate McKay and vice versa. (?)

GOOD THINGS:  Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber, Spalding Gray, time travel, cute dawg, Philip Bosco, anachronisms, sappy Sting song, chases on horseback

BAD THINGS:  Lead character with typical movie job has typical movie job problems. For my taste, there’s not enough time travel and anachronisms, too much romance, and not enough discussions of the space time continuum.

FEATURES:  Breckin Meyer, gowns, homely maidens, erection jokes, Natasha Lyonne, Bradley Whitford, James Mangold as “Movie Director” (Oh! The hilarity!), secret hiding places, Asian violinists, margarine discussions

UNCOMFORTABLE MOMENTS:  Well it’s sweet. Very sweet. Even the lecherous plot catalyst boss comes to his senses and does the right thing. It’s that sweet. Basically what I’m saying is that I need dental care now.

NOTABLE:  === deleted due to correction ===

BEST PART:  Breckin Meyer’s very strange line readings while demonstrating his acting ability or the toaster invention or the erection jokes. (Sue me, they made me giggle.)

BEST LINE:  “I’m suggesting you pick the poop up.” Yes, I’m sorry, but that is the best line and if you would like to see the movie and correct me, please do.

CROWNS:  4 out of 5 (corrected)
