Minority Report

MOVIE:  Minority Report

NUTSHELL:  Stephen Spielberg’s direction of Philip K. Dick’s short story about a future Pre-Crime Law Enforcement Department that catches future murderers with the aid of pre-cognitive humans.

GOOD THINGS:  Tim Blake Nelson, script by Scott Frank and Jon Cohen, that hip-shaking Jesus’ Son girl Samantha Morton with a head shave, Neal McDonough, interesting future stuff, no effects overload

BAD THINGS:  Un-hygienic surgical procedures, violence against children, Swedes, villains that make you cringe

FEATURES:  Max von Sydow, Jessica Capshaw, Colin Farrell, Daniel London, Lois Smith as the crazy old lady, Kathryn Morris, Arye Gross, Mike Binder, Jessica Harper, Jason Antoon, Peter Stormare, Caroline Lagerfelt, contortionists, Scott Frank, Cameron Diaz, Cameron Crowe, enough advertising for 8 Superbowls

UNCOMFORTABLE MOMENTS:  I think it’s supposed to be a counterpoint to the streamlined, polished future that they are still chewing gum like big old cows but God I never thought I’d survive all the gum chewing.

NOTABLE:  I really couldn’t care less what happens to Tom Cruise in a movie and actually seem to prefer watching him get beaten up, but my enjoyment of this movie didn’t seem to suffer much from my distaste for Cruise.

BEST PART:  I just love a good, clever tank top joke.

BEST LINE:  “Careful, Chief. Dig up the past, all you get is dirty.”

CROWNS:  4 out of 5
